Rector's address

Gorno-Altaisk State University is a classical university, the only higher education institution in the Altai Republic, representing a multidisciplinary educational complex.

Gorno-Altaisk State University was founded in 1949, when it was known as the Gorno-Altaisk Teacher Training Institute. From the very beginning, the main objective was to train educational professionals for the Republic of Altai.

I would like to note that graduates who receive their pedagogical education at our university become in demand as highly qualified specialists not only in educational institutions, but also in other sectors. Many of our graduates with a pedagogical background currently hold high positions in various organizations.

In 1993, due to the need for specialists in agriculture, energy, and other technical fields, a classical university was established, which now offers 48 bachelor's and master's degree programs.

XXI century – a century of rapid and significant changes! Information technologies and means of production are developing, scientific concepts are changing, and professional tasks and requirements are becoming more complex. Gorno-Altaisk State University not only adapts to modern demands, but also serves as a platform for testing and developing innovative projects in higher education.The university's structure includes 11 laboratories, 2 research schools, 7 research centers, a UNESCO chair on sustainable development of mountain territories and an academic department of the same name, created jointly with IWEP SB RAS.

«The jewel of Gorno-Altaisk State University is the Altaism and Turkology Chair», noted Valery Falkov, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, during his visit to our university. Indeed, one of the unique features of Gorno-Altaisk State University is the Center of Altaism and Turkology, which conducts scientific research on the preservation and development of indigenous languages of the Altai Republic, the literary heritage of writers from Gorny Altai, as well as the cataloging and deciphering of ancient Turkic monuments.

Gorno-Altaisk State University today is:

  • 50 research projects, including grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Science Foundation, and the Presidential grant for young scientists;
  • 117 intellectual property objects;
  • a research center for the History and culture of Turkic peoples;
  • a center for tourism and hospitality development;
  • a Sociological Research Center;
  • a Center for Molecular genetics and biotechnological research "Biotech" and much more.

While dynamically developing, the university does not forget its rich longstanding traditions, created by a professional and progressive team of educators-researchers and bright, talented students.

Over 75 years of the University transformation, one of its main tasks remains the growth of the youth intellectual and scientific potential. In addition, the University has become a solid foundation for the development of the regional higher education system. It is engaged in training highly qualified specialists, conducting crucial scientific research, and developing relevant projects.

Gorno-Altaisk State University is a scientific and intellectual center where the educational process, research activity, and public engagement are successfully combined.
